Most mornings begin with a walk. Even in the chill of early spring, nothing sets up the day for creativity and connection like exploring nature. Especially with my pup! Little Debbie bounces out the door and we’re off. Today is a glove day, though most of the time I forget to wear them. The air is clear and cold, the sky a fresh blue, the field filled with clean sunlight.

Last week I heard the sound of boat motors revving every time I walked, the warmth drawing the men outside to prep their crafts for the upcoming season. Today, however, it’s hawk cries and woodpeckers punctuating the soundscape, while cardinals trill a pleasant song of contentment.

Cat-like, Deb pounces and hunts among the hillside tussocks as we work our way down. We stop to check out the ice patterns on the small, dark pond by the red-budding maple at the bottom. I love how they look like the cracks and veins of granite. Now it’s back up the hill to track the fox I saw cruise through a couple days back. I’ve heard that foxes smell strong and it must be true because Debbie still goes frantic in pursuit, though the trail is no longer fresh.

He was beautiful though, that fox. Elegant. Burnished mahogany coat with an impossibly fluffed black tail. He turned to look at me after crossing onto the neighbor’s gravel driveway. Arresting, those eyes. He held my gaze for a full four seconds then loped toward a firewood pile and vanished. The hunting beagles across the street never even knew he existed! I definitely did. Eye contact with a fox is a magical experience. Intense, yet serene.

Today though, the walk feels light. Today is twinkling silver and a calm deep breath and the expectation of laughter. Savoring the day while looking ahead toward the sunny season with hope. It’s walking in simplicity.

And it’s back inside to the fire for both of us.
